Chengdu City Tour

chengdu city
Chengdu was founded in the 3rd century BC after the Qin people conquered all of China. The city was so important to the Qin that it was given the name Chengdu, which means "Perfect City." It is located on a fertile but dry plain, so to successfully farm the region; the Qin established the world's first large-scale irrigation system. Still in operation today, this irrigation system supports one of the world's densest agrarian populations. Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding and Research Center

As the living treasure of China, the Giant Panda is known worldwide as the symbol of animal conservation efforts. It is an endangered species that is slowly rebuilding its population, thanks to the research centers like the one you can visit in Chengdu. So much so that more and more of these magnificent animals are being donated to zoos around the world. The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, also known as Panda Base, is one of the most successful of these institutes. In the 1970s zoologists began working with six pandas, there are now 39 located at the base. The environment here is exquisitely designed with luxurious stands of bamboo. This sanctuary is home, not only to giant panda, but red pandas, black-necked cranes, golden monkeys, and flocks of wild birds.

Giant Panda Museum
This half-day tour also includes the Chengdu Giant Panda Museum. Built in 1992, it features popular exhibits in the appropriately named exhibition wings: Giant Panda Hall, Butterfly Hall and Vertebrate Hall. Giant Panda Hall is the first museum established for China's living national treasure and will provide you with a complete zoological record of the animal including fossil remains, ecological exhibits and history of the Chinese efforts to save this amazing animal.

Sanxing Dui Museum
You can learn about the culture that existed in China between 2,800 and 800 BC at the Sanxing Museum. The museum houses some of the area’s most ancient remains excavated near the present city of Guanghan. The remains were discovered by a farmer 1929 and in the years since, more and more clues about the mysterious Sanxingdui are being unearthed.

Hot Pot
Along with the evening's entertainment you'll enjoy a Hot Pot dinner, a communal eating experience where diners sit around a steaming pot and cook the tender morsels of meat and vegetables themselves. It's a popular Chinese custom and great opportunity to share all your experiences in Chengdu with your fellow diners.

Sichuan Opera
Sichuan Opera has a history spanning 300 years and your evening's entertainment celebrates the music, voice, dance and humor of the region. The show begins with the classic "Nightmare of Shi Huaiyu," which is part ghost story and part love song, featuring famous characters from Chinese fiction. Next the performance features two soloists on traditional Chinese instruments. Later on in the opera, a solo will be performed on the Guqin, the Chinese zither. The Guqin is associated with wisdom and nobleness and is used for only the most traditional and sentimental music.

Between solos the "Singing of Cuckoo" is performed in classic Sichuan surd singing style. Surd singing is one of the most difficult techniques in all of Chinese music, and the Cuckoo is one of the best-known folk songs among Sichuan people. The show's finale will be the joyous "Wild Dance of Golden Snake." This traditional folk music is full of humor, merriment, and the personality of the West Shu country people who perform the dance.
